The building industry has quickly evolved from foundation systems involving labour intensive activities such as ground trenching and steel caging to biaxial rafts (also called waffle mats, waffle rafts, floating rafts, ribbed rafts). The next generation biaxial raft foundation developed here at Cresco is robust, cost effective, quick to install and sustainable. Our technology is currently used in Australasia under three brands (Firth RibRaft® Xpod™, Armadillo™ Foundation System and BIAX™ Foundations).
The RibRaft Xpod is an engineered foundation system for residential buildings up to two storey high. The RibRaft Xpod is the best solution for New Zealand ground conditions. It can be used on ‘good ground’ as well as on liquefiable soils (such as TC2) through to Auckland’s expansive clays. By using components made from recycled polypropylene, the RibRaft Xpod is also a sustainable alternative to foundations generating tonnes of polluting polystyrene from void former off cuts each year.
The Armadillo™ Foundation System is the most robust proprietary waffle slab technology available in New Zealand. The Armadillo™ Foundation System is the perfect balance of stiffness and strength created by a unique interweaving patented structural pattern being a cost effective option for light commercial and multi-storey residential buildings. The Armadillo™ technology has been successfully used for the Christchurch post-earthquake recovery program.
Biax foundations provides the ultimate solution for any soil class condition including highly expansive clays. With the Biax system the construction of waffle rafts is faster than with any other method, as plastic void formers are designed to interlock and click into place. Biax foundations are robust and cost effective reducing earthworks, piers and waste on site.
Wafflesuite™ is a software that runs calculations of waffle ratfs in compliance with AS2870 Appendix F. Other software available on the market are limited to mono-dimensional analysis of rafts with a continuous contact area. Wafflesuite™ can run calculations of bi-dimensional structures utilizing hollow void formers and supported by bi-dimensional mounds, allowing significant design optimizations.
Pixel™ is the patented modular sliding bearing that allows maintenance of the sliding components via access through a floating floor. For each Pixel™ unit, multiple sliding supports are combined in a modular array that allows their removal without causing the loss of support and structural damage. The Pixel™ is a world-first innovation for cost effective seismic base isolation of buildings without a basement.
The Piletop™ Sliding Cap has been developed for mitigation of horizontal inertial forces induced to the piles heads by a seismic event. The device is equipped with a shock absorber able damp and slow the pile course preventing detrimental impulsive forces. When the Piletop™ Sliding Cap is used, the pile diameter may be reduced and cost savings generated yet ensuring resilience.
Underpinning and relevelling works often involve expensive earthworks, concrete pours and, in general, they are quite disruptive. Furthermore, for some soil conditions, the use of concrete pads may alter and reduce the performance of a building when liquefiable or compressible layers of soil are surcharged and punching failure mechanisms may be triggered. The Armadillo Jacking Pads are the ideal solution for these problems as they are slim, lightweight and do not require concrete pours yet are super strong.
